The MatriX Veloce mainsail on this Express 37 is made with continuous yarns that run from corner-to-corner, across the shaping seams. It was made by UK-Halsey Sailmakers in Sydney, Australia. After 150 hours of use, the shape of the mainsail is still fast. This picture was taken November 28th, on the last day of the 2009 racing season on New York’s Long Island Sound. THE BEST WAY TO LEARN THE RACING RULES IS NOW EVEN BETTER
If you have been using the UK-Halsey animated rules quizzes on our web site, we now have more reasons for you to consider purchasing our Rules Quiz Program download.
     The newest addition to the program is our rules test, which is exclusive to the program. UK-Halsey’s chief rules guru, Charles “Butch” Ulmer, said, “We developed a multiple choice test designed to help sailors apply the rules to common race-course scenarios. Instead of trying to ‘catch’ people with tricky questions, we want them to learn the rules of common situations so that they will immediately know their rights and obligations when they get into similar situations on the race course.”
     Upon finishing the 37-question test, the answers are tabulated and a score sheet with detailed explanations of the correct answers is immediately shown. Users can take the test as many times as they want.
     Don’t just take our word for how big an addition the test is to the program. Barry Fox recently commented, “What a great addition to an already great package! I really enjoy the videos (in the Lifted Tack section) as well. I think Butch has a great presentation quality and his very matter-of-fact way of explaining things is right up my alley.” Jos Spikerman wrote in his rules newsletter Look to Windward, “A good tool to test your knowledge and understanding of the rules. With the correct answers, a comprehensive and clear explanation is provided. So you learn from your mistakes. For those of you who are serious in learning the RRS, the UK-Halsey Rules Quiz program is very good tool.”
     The program costs $55, or $40 for those who are upgrading from the CD version of the program. For the money you get the following features that are exclusive to the program.
• Animations that can be played full screen;
• The ability to have three critical windows open at the same time: the animation, the quiz answer and the text of a hot-linked rule or definition;
• Our new 37-question multiple choice rules test that comes with detailed answers;
• Seven instructional videos that show Butch Ulmer at seminars teaching different aspects of the rules -- with more to be posted shortly;
• A rules blog that includes writers like Rob Overton (head of US Sailing’s Rules committee);
• PDFs with rule related information that you can download;
• And frequent free updates.

ABBY IS A SHELLBACK
Abby Sunderland, in her bid to be the youngest to sail around the world non-stop, crossed the equator at about 3 pm on February 20th. In her blog she wrote:
     “It’s really exciting to have finished the first leg of my trip, even if it is a small one... on to the Horn!! The equator itself isn’t the most exciting thing in the world. There is no line through the middle of the world or anything, in fact, the southern side of the world is very much like the northern side!
     “I was a little worried that I would end up crossing the equator twice in one day! I had hardly any wind getting across. About a mile over the equator the wind died completely and all I had was a current pushing me backwards!
     “The wind has picked up a little now. I’m not racing along or anything but I’m moving and the wind should be picking up more soon. I think crossing the equator once a day is plenty and I’m glad I didn’t have to do it again!”

TITANIUM 2010 – NICOLAS BERENGER’S SOUND CHOICE

ABOVE: Berenger in yellow and his bundled up crew were all smiles.
TOP: Bereger squeezes in for a perfect pin-end start.
In mid February, Nicolas Berenger returned to his winning ways in the fast and exciting Longtze One-Design sport boat class at the Monaco Yacht Club’s 2010 Primo Cup. Berenger had some old business to take care of after losing the last regatta of the 2009 Longtze European tour by one point. The loss didn’t cost him the Tour victory, just some pride and having months during the off-season to think about what he could do better.
     By dominating the first regatta of the 2010 European Tour, Berenger showed that his star is growing brighter, rather than fading. His new UK-Halsey Titanium sails made by UK-Halsey France powered him to five firsts, one second and one third in the 15-boat fleet. He finished six points ahead of Eckhard Kaller’s second place WET FEET and 13 points ahead of the third place VOILES &VOILIERS.
     Nicolas’ boat literally flew over the waters of Monaco. Congrats to the Berenger task force: Sylvain Chtounder, Olivier Duthoit and Edouard Masse, who have once again won the 2010 Primo Cup.
     Bravo to Nicolas Berenger; may the force — and a sponsor — be with you for the next Route du Rhum.

J/80 SAIL DEVELOPEMENT ROLLS ON

     UK-Halsey’s Kerry Klingler, a past J/80 World Champion, won J/80 class in the 2010 St. Petersburg NOOD regatta that was sailed the same weekend as the Primo Cup. Weather conditions were generally the same on both sides of the Atlantic. Shown above is Kerry and his team bundled for the cold, windy and sometimes rainy conditions -- in FLORIDA.
The regatta showcased Kerry’s new mainsail and spinnaker designs for the class. He says that the new spinnaker is demonstrably faster than his previous design, which many in the fleet are using. “Every time we rounded the windward mark near CHRISTIE, the boat that finished second in the regatta, we sailed faster and deeper downwind and ended up making huge gains by the leeward mark.” UK-Halsey powered boats dominated the fleet taking three of the top five places and six of the top 10.
